rooted literacy

growing strong readers one at a time

When a seed is planted, the first thing to grow is the roots. Roots are the system used to nourish the growing plant but also provide structure and stability to the growing seedling. The roots help hold the soil in place, anchoring and securing the plant to grow into full maturity. The roots originate from the seed and everything else originates from the root. While the roots are underground and not seen, they are essential for the growth and health of any flower, plant, shrub or tree.

At Rooted Literacy, we believe the process of learning to read is exactly the same. Learning to read, write and spell English requires structured and systematic instruction. The basic tools of reading also need to be watered and nourished often in order for a reader to grow successfully.  That's why at Rooted Literacy, we focus on five components of literacy instruction: phonological awareness, phonics, vocabulary, fluency and comprehension. These five "roots" of literacy instruction need to be taught directly, practiced consistently and established into a secure and anchoring structure in order for new or struggling readers to grow into strong and mature readers.

At Rooted Literacy, our greatest passion is to have our students enjoy the road to reading with confidence. It would be our pleasure to guide your child to strong literacy skills while helping them discover and grow to their full potential.
